Grant Writing Activities

In 2007 dHA launched a new grant writing arm, headed up by Dianna Miller, in response to client requests for assistance in grant writing. Ms. Miller has two years of experience as a grant writer for the City of Bridgeport where she raised close to $2 million in funds. These grants primarily focused on economic development, environmental and cultural arts initiatives. She also has three years of experience as a grantwriter at a community health center giving her a unique perspective on the needs of Connecticut's cities and working class residents. Ms Miller offers two types of grant support through dHA.

Grantwriting: If a client contacts us and has a specific grant they would like to apply for Ms Miller will meet with them to discuss the grant solicitation and their program plan. After that meeting Ms. Miller will develop a proposal including a time frame and proposed cost for having dHA's assistance in responding to the grant. At that point the client can determine whether or not to bring dHA on to aid in the grant writing process.

Grantseeking: Many of our clients would like to apply for grants to provide support for existing or expanding programs, however they are unsure of how to do so. Given this need dHA offers grantseeking. Again Ms. Miller will meet with the client to determine the types of services they would like to get grants for and develop a plan based on those needs for grantseeking. Generally we recommend that clients invest in grantseeking for 3-6 months. In that time Ms Miller will dedicate a set number of hours to investigating potential funders and when appropriate conduct research on the types of programs funded historically and in some instances contact funders to discuss the potential of providing support for the types of efforts the client has prioritized. Ms Miller may develop letters of intent on the client's behalf. Once a potential funding source has been identified Ms Miller will (as above) develop a proposal for the client on the hours of her time required to develop the proposal for the client for their consideration. "The nice part of grantseeking is that it offers clients the one on one technical assistance they need to begin the grant process".

"Clients may decide to combine both of these offerings into a unique grantseeking/grant writing package that will offer a good start of where to seek grants along with some writing to smaller foundations including some letters of inquiry."
